About Ponytail Skates

Founded in 2023, Ponytail Skates is the ongoing project of Ponytail, a Native American artist from Southern California whose practice moves freely between illustration, painting, graphic design, digital media, and emerging image-making technologies.

Drawing from popular culture, music, subculture, commercial graphics, and the visual language of everyday life, Ponytail creates a recurring cast of figures that function somewhere between characters, symbols, and self-contained emotional worlds. The work often occupies the space between optimism and melancholy, combining immediacy and familiarity with a more personal interest in identity, belonging, memory, and representation.

Rather than treating any single medium as fixed or precious, Ponytail approaches image-making as an open process. Drawing, painting, digital composition, photography, typography, found references, and AI-generated imagery may all enter the work at different stages. Artificial intelligence is used as one tool among many—for image generation, composition, layout, variation, and experimentation—while the selection, direction, alteration, and final construction of the work remain part of a broader authored practice.

Ponytail Skates extends beyond a conventional studio practice. Images move between drawings, prints, clothing, comics, objects, and digital spaces, allowing the same visual language to exist simultaneously as art, design, merchandise, and cultural artifact.

At its center is an evolving visual world: recognizable characters, repeated gestures, fragments of language, and images intended to make people feel seen.
